FG not sincere, strike continues –ASUU

Image
PUBLIC university lecturers on Sunday insisted  that they would not return to the classrooms  on Monday (today). They also accused the Federal Government of insincerity in its bid to resolve its dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, confirmed this on Sunday via a Short Message Service  to an enquiry by  The PUNCH . The Federal Government had through the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie,  deferred its earlier ultimatum to the lecturers to resume work on Monday (today) or risk being sacked. The shift  was to enable them to participate in the burial of Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU on Saturday. Before this , the Supervising  Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had advised  the striking lecturers to return to work on or before December 4 or face dismissal.

The first accident was said to have been caused by an NNPC tanker with number plate, XG 321 MKA. The tanker was allegedly on top speed and had a brake failure. It rammed into the vehicle in front. Eyewitnesses said the development led to further collisions as other vehicles, which had slowed down because of the traffic snarl on the expressway, ran into one another due to the impact of the tanker. The driver was said to have also throw small

Bulletproof car scandal: Airline operators, others demand investigation

Image
Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah Some stakeholders in the aviation industry and civil society  groups   have called on the nation’s anti-corruption  agencies to investigate the purchase of two bulletproof vehicles for the Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah. The vehicles valued at a whopping $1.6m(about N225m) were said to have been  delivered to Oduah in August by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. But the aviation industry stakeholders and the groups, in separate interviews with our correspondents on Thursday, said their calls for a probe  were  necessary in order to identify and prosecute those behind the controversial deal. The aviation stakeholders are the  Airline Operators of Nigerian and  Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria. AON, through its Assistant General Secretary, Mr. Muhammed Tukur, described the purchase of the bulletproof cars as unfortunate, saying   it showed the high level of  corruption  in Nigeria . It  said,

You can defect, PDP dares rebel govs

National Chairman, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said it would not compel any of its members to remain within its fold. It said while it would prefer to dialogue with the aggrieved members to resolve any outstanding issues, it recognised that there was no compulsion in political party membership. The party was reacting to a threat by some of the governors to defect to the opposition All Progressives Congress if the crisis within the party persisted. National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent over the telephone that the party was a democratic institution made up of individuals who chose to be members on their own free will. He said, “We want them to remain in the party. We will want to work with them and resolve our issues; but we are in a democracy and in a democracy membership of a party is a choice freely made.” Metuh however declined further comments when asked to speak on the state of the

Clouds of fear as Nigeria turns 53

Image
Increasing wave of violence and insecurity casts a shadow on the Independence Day celebrations, writes CHUX OHAI A s Nigeria marks its 53rd anniversary today, the fear of possible attacks by Boko Haram and other insurgents appears to becloud the celebrations. Scared by the violent events of the last few days, it is easy to imagine how most Nigerians might spend Independence Day. The majority, no doubt, may consider staying away from crowded spots to avoid falling victim to terrorist attacks. Hardly any day passes without newspapers announcing yet another deadly attack by unidentified gunmen in screaming headlines. Only two days ago, about 50 students of a College of Agriculture in Yobe State were reportedly murdered in cold blood by gunmen believed to be members of the violent Islamic group known as the Boko Haram.  Most of the victims of the attack were said to have been killed while they slept. The rest were taken outside and simply cut down in a hail of bullets by the

Naija@53: Policy inconsistency, corruption ruin gains

Image
In 53 years, Nigeria has operated varied policies in the transport sector under different guises of transformation. Successive administrations at federal and state levels have always found reasons to tinker with whatever transport programme their predecessors left behind. They often sweet the old schemes aside, initiating new ones. This, experts note, offers them a good excuse to vote huge amount for the execution of the new projects. Opinions are divided on the level of progress the nation has attained in the transport sector under eight military rules and seven civilian administrations since independence. Some say every segment has received appreciable attention in terms of budgetary allocations; but many note there is hardly any justification for the allocated funds, insisting that it is all ‘motion without movement’. Corruption has denied the nation the expected gains of its moderate investment in the transport sector. For instance, virtually all the 50 new locomotive

Waheed, while handing over the suspects to their mothers, said there was a need for their respective state governments to rehabilitate them like the Edo State Government did with teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested on August 24, 2013 after sneaking into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane. He said, “These boys were found at different times at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Their aim was to get into any plane and travel out of Nigeria. “I decided to hand them over to their parents so they will be well taken care of and stop dwelling on

Ozekhome’s kidnap: SSS arrests gang leader

Image
Mike Ozekhome There were indications on Wednesday that a major financier of a  kidnapping ring in Edo and other surrounding states, Kelvin Oburuvbe might have been arrested by men of the Department of State Security. It was reliably gathered that the kidnap kingpin was picked up in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, by operatives of DSS and is currently being interrogated. There were however conflicting reports that the arrested kidnapper might be the one who recently issued a 60-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to declare amnesty for him and his gang, otherwise his group would blow up oil installations in Urobo speaking areas of the country. It was further gathered that Oburuvbe was instrumental to the recent abduction of human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, his driver and a leader of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Athansius Ugbome on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Ozekhome and Ugbome were released about one week apart after over two weeks in the kidnappe

A video believed to have been released by the wanted leader of  the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, surfaced in Maiduguri on Wednesday. In it, a man claiming to be Shekau, debunked earlier claims by the Nigerian military that he died from gunshot wounds on August 19, 2013. The  then JTF spokesman in Borno State,   Lt Col Sagir Musa, had in a statement said, “Intelligence report available to the JTF  Operation Restore Order revealed that  Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted terrorists’ leader may have died. “He died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on  June 30 , 2013. PDP crisis: Baraje, Tukur camps clash in Senate

Image
Barely a week after a similar clash at the House of Representatives, supporters of the main Peoples Democratic Party and those of the Kawu Baraje-led faction of the party clashed again at the Senate on Wednesday. A timely intervention by Senate President, David Mark however saved a crisis situation on the floor of the senate when members were making their contributions on a motion on the demise of late former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu. Trouble started when a former governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central Senatorial district, while extolling Agagu’s virtues, described himself as a member of the New PDP with Alhaji Kawu Baraje as the National Chairman.

Why FG wants ASUU strike to continue

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan and ASUU Chairman, Dr. Isa Faggae | credits: File copy Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been on strike since June 30 and has engaged in a series of dialogue with the Federal Government over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively. This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU’s body language and utterances, it has made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that it is ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that its decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.

The allegation, which was dismissed by the Presidency as a product of mischief makers, was made hours after  The PUNCH had   gathered   that PDP members in the House loyal to the Bamanga Tukur faction had  set up a “strategy group” to watch Tambuwal. The  New PDP  claimed that the plot to sack Mark and the Speaker  was over the visit of its National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje and  seven aggrieved PDP  governors   to the National Assembly on Tuesday. It said in a statement  by  its  National Publicity Secretary , Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, on Thursday, that  those behind the scheme must have a rethink. Jonathan, a drowning President –El-Rufai

Image
El-Rufai A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has described President Goodluck Jonathan as a drowning President, who distorts facts. El-Rufai, in a statement on Wednesday, insisted that Jonathan had resorted to ethnic and religious politics to score some political points. Nigeria's Police Are Corrupted, Full Of Armed Robbers, Extortionists

Image
Nigeria Police Nigerian policemen are deeply involved in unlawful activities and lose their lives every day because of that, the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of a Police Zone 6 Command, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, has admitted. He also acknowledged soaring corruption in the Criminal Investigation Department (CDI) of the Police Force. He made this statement during his visit to Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo on Tuesday. The AIG further lamented, "If you investigate our men, you will discover they are armed robbers. They are not contented with what they have. "We go to the road to extort money from people, engage in illegal business, and liaise with armed robbers." He, however, warned police officers who engage in criminal acts: when caught, they would be dismissed. "No criminal has lived in his criminality and has never been caught. If you want to live in palava, you will die in palava." He went on alleging that police officers sold ammuni

No money to meet ASUU’s demands, says Okonjo-Iweala

Minna— There ap-pears to be no end in sight to the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the country as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala declared, yesterday, that the nation’s economy cannot accommodate the demands of the lecturers for now. The minister spoke while delivering her keynote address at the opening ceremony of this year’s National Council on Finance and Economic Development, NACOFED, in Minna, Niger State, yesterday. Okonjo-Iweala She said that if other sectors were to be adequately and urgently developed, less emphasis should be placed on recurrent expenditure, especially salaries and allowances of workers.
