Did You Know That Powder Can Cause Cancer And More ?

Image
You’ve probably used it, or had it sprinkled on you at some time in your life. It’s processed from a soft mineral compound of magnesium silicate, and is called talcum powder or just talc. Talcum dusting powder is commonly used to reduce rashes and diaper irritation in babies and infants. But this practice is dangerous. It can result in the inhalation of significant amounts of powder, causing acute or chronic lung irritation, known as talcosis. However, this risk is readily avoidable as cornstarch powder is a safe and reliable alternative. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, and widely distributed by Osco and Walgreens, besides other drug stores, women have been persuaded by advertisements to dust themselves with talcum powder to mask alleged genital odors. Not surprisingly, the powder has become a symbol of freshness and cleanliness for over five decades. Warning on harmful effects of talc: The first warning of the dangers of genital talc came in a 1971 report on the identif

Image
Greater the flamingo arrived at the Adelaide Zoo in 1933 A flamingo believed to be the oldest of its kind in the world has died at the age of 83 in Australia. Greater the flamingo was put to sleep on Friday due to complications brought about by arthritis and old age, officials at Adelaide Zoo said. The flamingo, named after its species, arrived at the zoo in 1933 and was a popular attraction. Flamingos are wading birds with a very specialised diet. They have far shorter life spans in the wild. Greater flamingos – scientific name Phoenicopterus roseus – are usually larger than lesser flamingos and are characterised by pale plumage and pink bills. Greater the flamingo, who survived a bad beating by a group of teenagers in 2008, was a zoo favourite, officials said. “Greater is best known for being the world’s oldest flamingo and the last greater flamingo to have resided in Australia,” Elaine Bensted, Zoos South Australia chief executive, told Agence-France Presse news

OMG: Scientists Show Snakes Can Fly Distances of up to 30m

Image
The serpents flex their ribs and adopt an S-shape to allow them to "slither" through the air. Up in the air: Some snakes can fly - and now scientists know why Snakes no longer need to board an aircraft as in the cult movie Snakes on a Plane to take to the skies - for scientists have shown that some of them can actually fly. Boffins observed the serpents stretching and flattening out their bodies, allowing them to "slither" through the air in an Asian rainforest. By adopting an S-shape, some aerodynamic asps were even able to glide 100 feet from tall trees. Study leader Dr Jake Socha, from Virginia Tech Wake Forest University in the US, said:  "They look like they are swimming. They turn their whole body into one aerodynamic surface." Dr Socha's team of researchers found that flying snakes flex their ribs to stretch and flatten out their bodies.

2014 budget: Senators blast Okonjo-Iweala … accuse minister of imposing World Bank/ IMF policies

Image
Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala The debate on the 2014 Appropriation bill entered the  second day in the Senate on Wednesday with some Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress senators describing the document as anti-people.  They chided the  Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the way the bill was packaged and therefore called for its review. But others  like Senators Odion Ugbesia and Ayogu Eze argued  that  the bill  was  merely only a working document, which could be subjected to alterations in the interest of the masses.  Among the  senators  that picked holes in  the Appropriation bill were Smart  Adeyemi, Abdul Ningi, Olusola Adeyeye,  Ganiyu Solomon, Kabiru Gaya and  Gbenga Ashafa. Adeyemi and Ningi, who lamented the high recurrent expenditure as contained in the budget   and the continued depletion of the foreign reserves,    accused Okonjo-Iweala of imposing economic policies of the International Monetary Fund and the Wo

PDP, APC Senators clash over 2014 budget

Image
Nigeria Senate The Senate on Tuesday began debate on the 2014 Appropriation  bill with members disagreeing  along party lines on its passage. While the Peoples Democratic Party senators commended the bill  and called for its immediate approval,  their  All Progressives Congress  counterparts sought its rejection and return to the Executive for a rejig. To the PDP senators, the appropriation bill should be passed  because  it would promote economic growth and add fillip to the Transformation Agenda of the Goodluck  Jonathan administration. But the APC lawmakers believed that it was not packaged to empower the people and  address  insecurity in the country, especially in the  North-East. In fact, one of the APC lawmakers,  who said the  bill “does not worth the paper  it was  written on,”  called for the resignation of the Minister of Finance and the Supervising Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, because  she had disappointed Nigerians.
